A grey and white tabby cat that sauntered on to the hallowed Anfield turf during a crucial match has taken Twitter by storm.

Thousands of people are following @AnfieldCat on the social networking site after his cool-pawed cameo breathed life into a drab Monday night game between Liverpool and Spurs.

However, it wasn't just cat-loving pet insurance customers who were tickled by the appearance of the mog - who luxuriated over a 10 minute-plus wander around the pitch before being removed by a steward.

People immediately took to Twitter in response to the off-key substitution, with two accounts set up claiming to be the cat. Nearly 20,000 people are following the tweets of @AnfieldCat.

However, despite all the attention no-one has come forward to say they own the feline. Club officials have highlighted similarities between it and an abandoned cat who became linked to the club back in the Eighties.

Players and staff believed Moglet brought good luck to the club after he was found abandoned outside.

A spokesman for the club said: "With King Kenny's men back at Wembley in the Carling Cup final this year, is this new cat a long-lost relative of Moglet?"
